How a Solar Grid-Tied System Works
A solar power grid-tied system provides electricity to your home, commercial property or factory from photovoltaic (PV) cells in solar panels mounted on your roof or in your yard. PV cells convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity. This is then inverted into alternating current (AC) electricity which can be used to power your home or business. If you are looking to help save the environment and at the same time save money on your electrical bill and do not need storage or protection from power cuts then this is the system for you.
The more panels you have, the more electricity you can generate. When there’s no sunlight or when there’s not enough to provide for your electricity needs, power is drawn from the grid. In Thailand, this is provided by the Provincial Electricity Authority, (PEA). However, when there is a power cut on the grid you will also be without power, because this system relies on being connected to the grid. Eyekandi Solar is a PEA certified installer ensuring our customers the highest quality validated solar electrical systems.
When your solar panels produce more energy than you need at any one time the energy is sent back to the power grid. Your electricity meter will begin to spin backward. The PEA will credit you for it on your utility bill. Whether the electricity is being drawn from your solar panels or the grid power performance will stay the same.
Having a grid-tied solar electrical system installed by Ekykandi Solar means most, if not all, of your electricity needs will be catered for from the solar panels.
In Homes
During the day when your home does not use so much electricity as the panels are producing, you are receiving credit for the power being fed back into the grid. At night, when the solar panels are not producing power, your electricity is drawn from the grid. The credit your solar panels have gained during the day means your monthly PEA electricity bill is reduced.
In Businesses
A grid-tied solar electricity system has several advantages over off-the-grid systems. Solar panel systems rely on sunshine. Most days Thailand has an abundance. But there are bound to be cloudy days when electricity usage if high and the system doesn’t produce enough.
Grid-tied solar systems are less likely to leave you in the dark at inopportune times. If the power generated from your solar panel system is less than required, extra energy will be drawn in from the grid. The PEA grid essentially acts as a backup for your solar energy system.
Less energy is wasted as a result and you have a more efficient solar electrical system. Except in the event of a power outage, you will always have access to electricity during any time of day, as long as your system is connected to the grid.
Grid-tied systems are less complicated and there’s less equipment needed to be installed. This also means it’s the cheapest option for setting up a solar electricity system for your home or business. These systems require no maintenance and are fully monitored via a smartphone or computer.
The one main disadvantage is when the grid power fails at night. During the hours of darkness your solar panels are not producing electricity. This means that during grid power cuts you are in the same situation as everyone else relying on the grid for their power. This is where our Hybrid and Lithium Battery systems have an advantage.
Both these systems incorporate battery backup, so when the grid goes down at night and stops supplying electricity, your system draws it from the battery.
